Getting to Pompeii

The Circumvesuviana train line connects Naples and Sorrento, stopping at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station, a 5-minute walk from the Porta Marina entrance. From Naples, the journey takes about 35 minutes; from Sorrento, about 30 minutes. If you're visiting from Rome, take a high-speed train to Naples and connect to the Circumvesuviana, or book a guided day tour with return transport included.

Opening Hours by Season

In summer season (April 1 to October 31), Pompeii is open 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily, with last entry at 5:30 PM. In winter season (November 1 to March 31), it's open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, with last entry at 3:30 PM. The park is closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25.

Essential Packing Checklist

• Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes for uneven ancient stone paving
• A hat and reef-safe sunscreen — there's very little shade on site
• A refillable water bottle, especially in summer
• A light jacket or layer for cooler months
• A power bank if you're using your phone as an audio guide or camera

Arrive right at opening, prioritize the Forum and Amphitheatre first, and pace yourself — Pompeii covers over 160 acres. If you have a full day in the region, consider the combo tour with Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius to see all three sites at once.
